Most Portuguese universities follow a two-semester academic calendar, with autumn (fall) and spring semesters, but application intakes and deadlines vary by university and program.

Language Requirements

  1. English proficiency tests for English-taught programmes.

  2. Portuguese language skills for Portuguese-taught programmes.

How to Apply to Portuguese Universities

  1. Choose a Program and University

  2. Check Admission Requirements

  3. Translation of documents into Portuguese or English may be required.

  4. Submit Application

Undergraduate programmes: You can apply to up to six universities using the centralized portal Candidatura Online (in Portuguese).

Graduate programme: apply directly via the university’s website.

Application fees vary (non-refundable, typically €50–100).

  1. Receive Acceptance: 1–2 months after the deadline. 

Portugal Visa Processing and Requirements

Types of Student Visas

  • Short-Stay Visa (Type C Schengen Visa): For programmes less than 90 days (Language courses & Short-term research).

  • Long-Stay Visa (Type D Residence Visa): For programmes exceeding 90 days (Bachelor’s, Master’s & PhD).

Visa Requirements

  • Valid International Passport

  • Acceptance Letter from a recognized Portuguese educational institution.

  • Completed Visa Application Form

  • Passport-Sized Photos: Two recent photos (35mm x 45mm, white background).

  • Proof of Financial Means:

  3. Sponsor documents 

  • Accommodation Proof

  • Health Insurance coverage for your entire stay.

  • Criminal Record Certificate: May need translation and legalization

  • Proof of Tuition Payment: Receipt or scholarship confirmation (if applicable).

  • Visa Fee Payment

Portugal  Visa Application Process

  1. Contact the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate

  2. Schedule an Appointment

  3. Submit Documents: Attend the appointment or mail them (if allowed). Some consulates may require an interview.

  4. Wait for Processing: It can take at least 1–3 months.

  5. Track your application if possible.

Tuition Fees and Living Costs

Public universities: €1,000–€7,000 annually for international students (varies by programme).

Private universities: €3,500–€8,000 per year.

Living Costs

€600–€1,000 per month, depending on location 

Working While Studying

International students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during holidays, provided they hold a residence permit.
